Thank you to Linda Lotspeich

In an additional act of generosity and recognition of HHS's strong record in the arts and career preparation, Linda Lotspeich has also directed an additional $15,000 from her aunt’s trust to be divided between the new Construction and Sustainability Academy (CASA), visual arts, music and drama. This is above and beyond the establishment of the Nina Zanzi Art Scholarship in 2010. Ms. Zanzi was Ms. Lotspeich's aunt.

Thank You to Henry and Holly Wendt

October, 2009 -- HEF just received news that Henry and Holly Wendt have awarded a grant for $80,000 to fund the second phase of the Healdsburg Junior High Library Tech project. This generous Wendt Family Foundation grant allows HEF and the HUSD to move forward towards completion of the HJH Library Tech project.

Henry and Holly Wendt are the former owners of local winery Quivera Vineyards, and have a strong commitment to encouraging the use of both traditional and technological library resources to stimulate student interest and achievement. The Wendt’s provided the lead donation of $100,000 for the Healdsburg High School Library Technology Project completed in the summer of 2007, which has been warmly embraced by both students and staff alike.

The Healdsburg Junior High Library Tech Project second and last phase will take place over the summer once school is out, and includes a renovation of the HJH library to transform the space into a light and welcome environment conducive to student research, reading and working in teams. Some of the elements of this project include: improving the lighting, new library shelving and furniture and opening up the library space to the quad, and thereby making the library a welcoming focus of the school.

During the 2008-2009 school year, HEF partnered with our amazingly generous community, businesses, students and staff to raise over $80,000 to fund Phase I of this project. Implemented this past summer, Phase 1 included making the entire HJH campus wireless, and providing 48 laptop computers, 3 printers, and laptop carts, which enable the laptops to be used both in the library and in the classrooms. Phase 1 also included 5 new desktop computers and updated library software. Another important aspect of this project is that Phase 1 funds extending the hours of the Library to provide additional access to library space for studying, research and accessing the new, expanded technology. Last, Phase 1 includes a teacher pilot project that provides training and support of “early adopters” of the laptop program, who will in turn share their lessons with others about how to optimize the use of technology in classroom instruction.

Once again, thanks go to all the major donors, businesses, parents, staff, and students that supported this project. Phase 2 will be implemented during the summer of the 2009-2010 school year. Our HJH students and staff will be able to come to school and enjoy a new, exciting library space that we hope will foster a love for reading, help students improve their computer skills, and provide a productive and inspiring space for all of our HJH students to excel.

Benchland Estate Winery, Michel-Schlumberger is making a gift to the Healdsburg Education Foundation (HEF) in a planned payment toward their annual gift through HEF's Business Partnership Program. A long-time donor to HEF, Michel Schlumberger donates 50% of their Estate Tour and Tasting Fees to HEF. Their daily tours (at 11 and 2) make them a very popular winery destination.

Over the year's Michel Schlumberger has provided significant support for the Music and Arts programs in the Healdsburg public schools. The Healdsburg High School Jazz Band has graced the Michel Schlumberger stage at a number of the Winery's Friday Night Concerts which will continue until October 23. Jacques Schlumberger and his wife Barbara have been long time patrons of the arts on a local level and feel that the "arts must be supported on a grass roots level" beginning with our children.

"At Michel Schlumberger we invest in the future of our community through our sustainable farming practices and our support of our local public schools", Judd Wallenbrock, President and General Manager. Michel Schlumberger is an organically farmed estate winery located in the Dry Creek Valley.

During the 2008-2009 school year HEF raised approximately $300,000 for the Healdsburg and Alexander Valley public schools.
